What got you into the field of hairdressing?
When I was 15, I got one of the worst haircuts of my life. While the barber was cutting my hair, I had a thought, “Why am I paying for this when I could probably do a better job myself!” So, I went home and fixed my haircut and from then on started cutting my own hair. Then I started cutting one of my friends’ hairs, then two friends, then it became all my friends. When I was in high-school I ended up starting a small business in which I would travel to people’s houses and cut their hair for $5. It’s hard to imagine that was almost 30 years ago!
What is your favorite thing to do within as a hairdresser?
One of my favorite things to do as a stylist is to create a full look- the color, the cut, the style. To catch the essence of who that person is and capture that in a new look that they love.
What is something about your personality that helps you to be a great hairdresser?
I am very detail oriented and a bit of a perfectionist. Sometimes when I cut hair, I can get quiet and hyper focused. When I do this, I’ve tended to apologize to the client because I’ve realized at some point that I have been so focused on the hair that I haven’t carried on the conversation. Recently I apologized to a client for doing this and they replied, “Don’t you ever apologize for excellence, it is literally what I am paying you for and why I come to you!” That was a good reminder to me.
